Why Lighting Matters

Lighting is one of the most important factors in keeping your terrarium healthy. Terrariums need bright, indirect light to support plant growth without overheating or drying out the enclosure, especially for tropical plants commonly used in closed setups.

Ideal Lighting for Closed Terrariums

  • Bright, indirect light is best. Place your terrarium near a window but not in direct sun.
  • Direct sunlight can cause the terrarium to overheat and โ€œcookโ€ your plants.
  • North facing windows with sheer curtains work well.
  • If natural light is low, use a full-spectrum LED grow light.

How to Tell If Itโ€™s Getting Enough Light

  • Plants growing tall and pale? Likely not enough light.
  • Burnt or curled leaves? Possibly too much direct sun.
  • Moss turning brown or dry? Usually a sign of low humidity, and sometimes insufficient light.

Artificial Light Options

LED grow lights are ideal because they stay cool and provide consistent light. Keep the light far enough away that it doesnโ€™t warm the glass, especially for sealed terrariums.

  • Choose LED grow lights marked โ€œfull-spectrumโ€ or โ€œfor houseplantsโ€.
  • Keep the light on for 8โ€“12 hours a day, ideally on a timer.
  • Avoid putting the light too close, especially if your terrarium is sealed.

Getting the lighting right doesnโ€™t need to be complicated. Aim for bright, indirect light, keep your terrarium out of direct sun, and watch how your plants respond over time. If natural light is limited, a simple LED grow light on a timer can provide consistent, gentle light without overheating the enclosure. With the right balance, your terrarium will stay healthy, lush, and low-maintenance.
