Why Lighting Matters

Lighting is one of the most important factors in keeping your terrarium healthy. Terrariums need indirect, filtered light to support plant growth without overheating or drying out the enclosure.

Ideal Light for Closed Terrariums

  • Bright, indirect light is best. Place your terrarium near a window but not in direct sun.
  • Direct sunlight can cause the terrarium to overheat and โ€œcookโ€ your plants.
  • East or south facing windows with sheer curtains work well.
  • If natural light is low, use a full-spectrum LED grow light.

How to Tell If Itโ€™s Getting Enough Light

  • Plants growing tall and pale? Likely not enough light.
  • Burnt or curled leaves? Possibly too much direct sun.
  • Moss turning brown or dry? Could be a sign of low light or low humidity.

Artificial Light Options

Grow lights can help if your space doesnโ€™t get enough natural light:

  • Choose LED grow lights marked โ€œfull-spectrumโ€ or โ€œfor houseplantsโ€.
  • Keep the light on for 8โ€“12 hours a day, ideally on a timer.
  • Avoid putting the light too close, especially if your terrarium is sealed.
